چکیده

Computer based training has been intensively studied in the last decades and its application in different domains became highly popular. Current systems, however, only provide a fully simulated environment in which the training takes place. Their application is therefore limited by the complexity of the simulated scene or by the capability of the underlying hardware. A concept which can be used to alleviate these problems is augmented reality (AR). Here, a computer generated environment is combined with the real one. While the definition of AR includes augmentation of several modalities, the term still mainly refers to a mere visual augmentation. A visuo-haptic augmented reality therefore extends the basic concept by providing additional haptic sensations from the virtual environment to the user. This allows a user to not only see the virtual world, but in addition to touch it, making more natural interactions possible. In this thesis we investigated visuo-haptic AR and its feasibility to be used in training frameworks. We focused on the fidelity of the AR illusion and the performed research can be divided into different branches: The visuo-haptic augmented reality system itself, the perception within the environment, and the application in different demonstrator systems. Main contributions are the accurate calibration of the haptic interface, the development of a flexible distributed visuo-haptic AR framework, the improvement of visual depth perception by incorporating dynamic shadows and correct handling of occlusions, and an investigation of visuo-haptic perception of compliant objects in AR systems.

Visuo-Haptic Augmented Reality runtime environment for medical training

During the last decade, Visuo-Haptic Augmented Reality (VHAR) systems have emerged that enable users to see and touch digital information that is embedded in the real world. They pose unique problems to developers, including the need for precise augmentations, accurate colocation of haptic devices, and efficient concurrent processing of multiple, realtime sensor inputs to achieve low latency. W...

Enhanced Visual Depth Cues for Collocated Visuo-Haptic Augmented Reality

Our current research focuses on the application of visuo-haptic augmented reality in medical training. The setup developed in this context enables collocated haptic interaction with scene objects. In order to allow natural manipulations, provision of appropriate depth cues becomes a crucial factor. Therefore, we have included fast occlusion handling and shadow synthesis in our augmented environ...

[DEMO] Comprehensive Workspace Calibration for Visuo-Haptic Augmented Reality

Visuo-haptic augmented reality systems enable users to see and touch digital information that is embedded in the real world. Precise colocation of computer graphics and the haptic stylus is necessary to provide a realistic user experience. PHANToM haptic devices are often used in such systems to provide haptic feedback. They consist of two interlinked joints, whose angles define the position of...

Detection of Nuclear Sources by UAV Teleoperation Using a Visuo-Haptic Augmented Reality Interface

A visuo-haptic augmented reality (VHAR) interface is presented enabling an operator to teleoperate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a custom CdZnTe-based spectroscopic gamma-ray detector in outdoor environments. The task is to localize nuclear radiation sources, whose location is unknown to the user, without the close exposure of the operator. The developed detector also enables i...

Visuo-Haptic Display Using Head-mounted Projector

This paper proposes a novel ‘Visuo-Haptic Display’ using a Head-Mounted Projector (HMP) with X’tal Vision optics. Our goal is to develop the device which enables an observer to touch a virtual object just as it is seen. We describe the detail design of an HMP with X’tal Vision, which is very suitable for Augmented Reality. For instance, the HMP makes almost-correct occlusion relationship betwee...
